Angry Birds, Justin Bieber, Old Spice Up for Webby Awards

The 15th Annual Webby Awards announced yesterday its list of nominees, including pop culture and internet icons like Angry Birds, Justin Bieber and the Old Spice Guy.

While the award categories range from Best Viral Video to Best Retail, many nominees “represent the sweeping impact of mobile and tablet devices on both culture and commerce”, the Webby Awards said in a statement. Some of these include Angry Birds and Fruit Ninja for the gaming category, Foursquare and Flipboard for social networking, and SoundCloud for the community category.

Elsewhere, viral videos and personalities predictably feature in many categories. Antoine Dodson and Autotune the News, Isaiah Mustafa, and OK GO are some nominees who have ‘gone viral’ online.

Alongside the smaller start-up sized nominees are big news outlets like The New York Times, the Guardian, the BBC and CNN, all of which have received multiple nominations.

Judging the nominees will be Martha Stewart, Arianna Huffington and Twitter co-founder Biz Stone. Winners will be announced 3 May, and the award ceremony—fans can tune in to a live broadcast online—will take place 13 June in New York City.
